What is OmegaGreen DHA?
OmegaGreen DHA is a plant-based omega-3 ingredient derived entirely from marine microalgae (Schizochytrium sp.) — the original source of the omega-3s that fish themselves eat. We simply skip the fish. The oil is stabilised with natural mixed tocopherols and delivered as a free-flowing powder. This provides both DHA and EPA together — a broader omega-3 profile than DHA-only alternatives.
Because it’s 100% algal-derived, OmegaGreen DHA contains no fish oil, no fish proteins, and none of the 14 UK/EU declarable allergens. This is good news for dogs with fish sensitivities, and a more sustainable choice for the oceans too.
How does it help your dog?
Omega-3 fatty acids are structural nutrients — they’re built into cell membranes throughout your dog’s body. In our Joint & Bone blend, OmegaGreen DHA contributes to normal joint function. It works alongside glucosamine sulphate, chondroitin and Ovopet® as part of the complete formulation. DHA also plays a well-recognised role in supporting normal brain function — a welcome bonus, particularly for dogs in their senior years.
Is it safe for long-term use?

Why algae is our choice of omega-3 for dogs?
Plenty of supplements use fish oil. We chose algae instead: the same omega-3s, straight from the source, sustainably grown, with no fishy compromise for sensitive dogs — and no fishy smell for anyone’s kitchen. It’s a considered choice, and it’s typical of how the whole Joint & Bone blend was put together. Every ingredient earned its place.
The science behind going straight to the source
Here’s something most owners don’t know: the omega-3 in fish is fluctuating — and falling. Research tracking farmed Atlantic salmon found combined DHA and EPA levels dropped from around 2.7g per 100g of fish in 2006 to around 1.2g by 2015, as farming feeds changed. Fish oil itself frequently contains less than 10% DHA+EPA combined.
Our algal source contains more than 30% omega-3 DHA+EPA — a concentrated, consistent level that doesn’t depend on what the fish were fed that year. The microalgae are cultivated in fermentation vats on land, which means the water quality and growth process are fully controlled — no ocean pollutants, no supply-chain guesswork, and no fishing pressure on marine ecosystems.
Peer-reviewed research has also looked specifically at algal DHA in dogs: studies of Schizochytrium sp. as a dietary DHA source in dogs have supported both its safety and its role in normal cognitive function — which is why we say the brain benefit is well-recognised rather than wishful.
